A
minor body is an object in the
Solar System that is not a
planet, a
dwarf planet or a natural satellite. The term was first defined in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union as follows: «All other objects, except satellites, that orbit around the Sun will be collectively referred to as
minor bodies in the Solar System (Solar System Small Bodies, SSSB)». This encompasses all comets and all minor planets other than dwarf planets. Thus, the SSSB are:
comets, the
asteroids of the
Asteroids Belt (except for the dwarf planet
Ceres), the
trojans (asteroids that share orbit with a planet around the stable Lagrange points L4 and L5, which are located 60 ° in front and 60 ° behind the planet in its orbit), the
centaurs (bodies that behave so much like asteroids like comets) and
transneptunian objects (with the exception of dwarf planets).
