A
dwarf planet is an object of planetary mass that orbits the Sun, which has enough mass to maintain a hydrostatic balance (that is, it has a spherical or quasi-spherical shape), but that, unlike the
planets, has not cleared its orbit of smaller objects. Currently, there are 5 celestial objects (
Ceres,
Pluto,
Haumea,
Makemake and
Eris) that have been officially considered dwarf planets, but there is a list of about 12 objects that are considered candidates for it. Some of them have satellites. All dwarf planets except Ceres, which is located in the
Asteroids Belt, are located in the
Kuiper Belt or the
Scattered Disc.
