Interplanetary Exploration
Makemake, officially (136472) Makemake, is a dwarf planet discovered in 2005 by Mike Brown's team, the third largest in the Solar System and one of the two largest objects in the Kuiper Belt. Its name derives from the Rapanui god Make-Make. Its diameter is 1,420 km, slightly more than half that of Pluto. In 2015 it was discovered that it owned a satellite, provisionally called S / 2015 (136472) 1, about 175 km in diameter orbiting at a distance of approximately 21,000 km. It has an extremely low average temperature, close to −243.2° C (30 K), so its surface is covered with methane, ethane and possibly with nitrogen in the solid state.
