The
Asteroid Belt is a circumstellar disk of the
Solar System that lies between the orbits of
Mars (1,5 AU) and
Jupiter (5,2 AU). It houses a multitude of irregularly shaped astronomical objects, called asteroids, and the
dwarf planet Ceres. This region is also called the main belt in order to distinguish it from other minor body groupings in the Solar System, such as the
Kuiper Belt or the
Oort Cloud, as well as the
trojans and
centaurs. An
asteroid is a rocky celestial body in the Solar System, smaller than a
planet and larger than a meteoroid. The main objects of the belt are Ceres (which, as mentioned, is considered a dwarf planet and not an asteroid),
Vesta,
Pallas, Hygiea and Juno.
