Mimas is a
Saturn satellite discovered in 1789 by
William Herschel. Of the Saturn satellites that were discovered by Herschel, it is the most internal (it rotates around Saturn in about 22.5 hours). Its name comes from Greek mythology, Mimas being one of the giants, son of Gea. The most prominent element of Mimas is the Herschel crater, which occupies a significant percentage of its surface and is especially visible, and which makes the grayish satellite reminiscent of the Death Star from Star Wars.
