Johann Gottfried Galle (Radis, 1812 / Potsdam, 1910) was a German astronomer known for the discovery of
Neptune, following the calculations and indications of Urbain Le Verrier (with the help of his student Heinrich Louis d'Arrest) on September 23, 1846. The British John Couch Adams was also considered for a time to be the discoverer of this
planet, although his calculations were much less precise than those of the French. Galle was also one of the discoverers of the
Saturn C ring, discovered 3
comets between 1839 and 1840 and compiled 414 comets.
