Interplanetary Exploration
Edward Emerson Barnard (Nashville, 1857 / near the Yerkes Observatory, 1923) was an American astronomer known for being a skilled observer. In 1876 he built a telescope and in the 1880s he discovered 8 comets. In 1892 he discovered Amalthea, the first satellite of Jupiter discovered after Galileo Galilei. His maps of Jupiter's satellites were overcomed only to space probes. In 1916 he discovered the star that bears his name, a red star that is the 4th closest to the Solar System. He also cataloged 336 dark nebulae and hundreds of Milky Way starfields and bright nebulae.
