The
Scattered Disc is a region of the
Solar System whose innermost part overlaps the
Kuiper Belt (at 30 AU from the Sun) to an unknown distance that could be a few hundred AU (so far, 460 AU) and also to other inclinations above and below the ecliptic. It contains an uncertain number of celestial bodies (about 90 have been discovered so far) known simply as scattered disk objects (SDO), and which are part of the
transneptunian objects family. They are frozen bodies, made up of rock, metal and ice, some over 1,000 km in diameter, the first of which was discovered in 1995. The largest member of the group is the
dwarf planet Eris, discovered in 2005.
